در طی ۱۴ سال گذشته ، درگاه انتقال داده جهانی (Universal Serial Bus) یا همان USB تبدیل به رابطی استاندارد برای اتصال دستگاه های مختلف الکترونیکی به کامپیوتر شده است. فرقی نمی کند که این دستگاه یک دیسک سخت خارجی ، دوربین دیجیتال ، ماوس ، چاپگر و یا اسکنر باشد، زیرا اتصال فیزیکی به منظور انتقال اطلاعات بین دستگاهها به طور کلی توسط کابلی با پورت یواس بی انجام می پذیرد. این رابط در واقع یک رابط پذیرفته شده در مقیاس جهانی است.
تکنولوژی یواس بی از سال ۱۹۹۳ در حال توسعه بوده است. اولین نسخه یو اس بی با نام USB 1.0 به طور رسمی در سال ۱۹۹۶ معرفی شد. این استاندارد سرعت کمی در انتقال اطلاعات از یک دستگاه به دستگاه دیگر داشت( نرخ انتقال کم سرعت ۱٫۵ مگابیت/ ثانیه برای ساب کانال کیبورد ها و ماوس ها ، و کانال پر سرعت ۱۲ مگابیت/ ثانیه). یواس بی ۲٫۰ که در سال ۲۰۰۱ آمد ، انقلابی در سرعت انتقال دیتا صورت گرفت با حداکثر سرعت باور نکردنی و سرسام اور ۴۸۰ مگابیت/ ثانیه.(عدد ۴۸۰ را با ۱۲ مقایسه کنید!) و پس از وقفه ای ۹ ساله در سال ۲۰۱۰ ، یواس بی ۳٫۰ سرانجام به بازار عرضه شد.
